Tallinn offers a pretty extensive selection of small boutique shops, but one of these has a special place in our hearts – or literally in our stomachs. We are talking about Juustukuningad (Cheese Kings) cheese shops, which have entered the local market with a bang. The first cheese shops were only opened in 2012, and now there are six cheese shops in Tallinn and nine altogether. The most centrally located ones in Tallinn can be found in Rotermann City and the Solaris shopping centre. The owner of Juustukuningad is a Dutch guy who fell in love with an Estonian woman and ended up moving to Tallinn (not the first and very likely not the last man to do that 😉 ).
Before Juustukuningad opened its shops we used to do cheese shopping in Kaubamaja or Stockmann department stores, but nowadays we almost without exception head to the Solaris Centre’s Juustukuningad. The shops offer a wide variety of cheeses and y ou can also taste them before making a purchase decision. Not surprisingly Dutch cheeses are well represented but Juustukuningad also sells cheeses from Spain, Italy, the United Kingdom, Norway, France, Germany and Switzerland. In addition, you can buy small snacks and different sauces from the shops. We are absolutely crazy about mustard sauce with dill and honey, as this seems to go with almost any cheese.
The service in Juustukuningad shops has always been friendly and professional, so don’t be afraid to ask for recommendations. In case you are wondering what you could buy as a souvenir from Tallinn, then why wouldn’t you buy cheese, sauce and wine? You really can’t go wrong with that combination. 🙂 More information can be found on Juustukunigad’s website.
The shop in Rotermanni is open Mon-Thu 11.00-20.00, Fri-Sat 10.00-20.00 & Sun 11.00-18.00.
The Solaris Centre cheese shop is open everyday from 10.00-21.00.
P.S. This isn’t a sponsored post! 🙂
