The Song Festival Grounds (Lauluväljak) have a special role in Estonian history and national identity, as it’s the place where the legendary Song Festival, “Laulupidu”, is held once every five years. During the Soviet era it had an important aspect in maintaining the Estonian integrity. It is claimed that the Singing Revolution began here. In addition, several huge concerts are held every year in Lauluväljak (Madonna, Metallica, MIKA and Robbie Williams are among those who have performed there) as well as the Öllesummer beer festival.
In the summer, it is also pleasant to stroll around the Lauluväljak since it is located within a walking distance from Kadrioru Park and Pirita’s coastal promenade. Busses 1A, 8 and 38 take you there from Viru Keskus. Just hop off at the Lauluväljak stop and head back to the city centre from the other side of the street.
